Heritage

Flint Castle was built by Edward I of England at the end of the 13th century. It hugs the shore of the Dee Estuary for good reason; in those days it was much safer for English armies to travel in and out of Wales by sea rather than run the risk of being ambushed on land. By contrast, Chirk Castle is a large borderlands fortress - entire and palatial - enjoying glorious views over the plains of Cheshire and Shropshire. You may notice a red hand on the iron gates. There’s a bloody tale behind that red hand…but we’ll save that for when you visit. More detailed heritage information is available in What to see and do.

Cry God for Owain, Wales and St David
