Let's face it, a nice green salad only gets you so far. But we can all get excited about a really good pie. And Hawarden Estate Farm Shop does one of the best around.

The meat for their Welsh Beef and Black Beer Pie is home-reared and hung for 28 days for a fuller flavour. The beer is packed with chocolate malt for a rich velvety finish. And the pies are hand-made on the premises.

No wonder they won a coveted three-star gold award in the Great Taste Awards, the Oscars of the UK's food and drink industry.

The shop had already won Retailer of the Year at the True Taste Awards after just six months of trading. Then it won again the following year. Which makes it the best food shop in the whole of Wales. No argument.

Because they don't just sell their own goodies. Fruit and vegetables so fresh they still have the morning dew on them, apple and pear juices, jams and chutneys, beef and pork, even milk. They also provide a showcase for the very best local producers.

Here everyday is a food festival. But occasionally we make it official. In September, for instance, when Mold celebrates its local food and drink producers. Or in October when food stalls fill the Royal International Pavillion at Llangollen.

Its all very well producing some of the finest food in Britain. But someones got to cook it. You're in safe hands at Tyddyn Llan restaurant with rooms. Master chef Bryan Webb has quite a way with our local game. Not to mention a Michelin star.
